Cattle Yard Location

Accessibility by people, trucks and trailers and of course stock is paramount for a good cattle yard. Normally the easiest place to pen cattle is along a fence, especially in the corner of a paddock. Ideally, this location should be where several paddocks or laneways converge. The fence line close to the yard may get additional pressure from cattle pushing on it; therefore larger post in additional basing may be needed in this part of the fence line.

Look for high, well-drained sites. Avoid location where slopes are greater than 10⁰ (about 2 inches per foot). Build facilities near electricity and water if possible, however, avoid building them adjacent to residents where dust, flies, noise or odour might be grounds for complaints.

Here is a checklist of items to consider when locating a cattle-handling facility.
