Some older models of steel yards were very noisy as the rails were long pipes and rattle a lot. Most modern steel yards have no rattle and are quiet to operate.
The most common width of race would 750mm inside. This ideal if the race is curved. If it is straight a slightly narrower race ie 700mm will be OK. If a very tight curved race is planned it is important to take account of how much actual width as the curve can reduce it significantly.
Calves are best handled in a race approx 450mm wide. Many people handle their calves in the same race as their adult cows. Blanking off the sides of the race help stop calves turning around. Another option is to have some sort of reducer that reduces the race width down when handling calves but expands to handle the full size cattle.
